It was a sunny January afternoon when my boyfriend, Ryan, and I decided to go on a hike. We have been meaning to go and check out White Clay Creek State Park for quite some time and we finally got around to it. White Clay Creek State Park offers a variety of activities such as disc golf, diverse trails, fishing, and a Nature Center. The Park has over 37 miles of trails that vary of historical monuments, nature, and pavement. The trails are ideal for bikers, hikers, and runners of all abilities.

Fun Facts

  • White Clay Creek State Park includes parts of the boundary line made famous by Mason and Dixon, who began their historic survey at “a post mark’d west,” a location that lies within the park

  • The White Clay Creek was named a National Wild and Scenic River by the National Park Service in 2000, which added an additional layer of protection to the area

Ryan and I planned to hike the Bryan's Field trail, which was considered to be a moderate 2.1 miles. The trail consisted of meadow and a mature hardwood forest of maple, oak, and poplar over a packed Earth surface. The trail had the "Post Marked West" monument marking the location where the famous survey team started the well-known Mason-Dixon Line that runs for more than 200 miles due west from this point. However, Ryan and I accidentally took the wrong trail. We ended up hiking the Whitely Farms trail, which was considered to be a moderate 3.2 miles. The trail consisted of hayfields and a mature hardwood forest over a packed earth surface. The grade was moderate throughout, with a rapid descent near the approach of the Hopkins Road crossing and the connector to the David English Trail.

Our accidental trail ended up being 4 miles long, double of what we were expecting it to be! While the hike was not what we planned for, we both greatly enjoyed it! It was an exhausting hike but it was also very rewarding. We both love to hike and we are excited to go back to White Clay Creek State Park and explore more of the diverse trails!

Please enjoy the collection of photos below taken during our hike!
