Wildwood Crest, New Jersey
September 2020
This year marked the 18th season of operation for the Thunder Cat Dolphin Watch & Speedboat Tours. They are voted the #1 Dolphin Watching Tour in all of South Jersey by TripAdvisor. They have also been voted Best of Philly in 2016 by the Philadelphia Magazine.
To prepare for your tour, I advise using the restroom beforehand since you will be out at sea without one for 90 minutes. There are public restrooms available for use located right before you walk down the dock to the boat. I would also advise wearing sunglasses to shield your eyes from the misting seawater and sun (I would advise against hats unless they have a strap that tightens under the chin, the speedboat goes rather fast at times and the wind can knock your hat off). Lastly, I would advise wearing sunscreen because you will be in direct sunlight the entire time. The tour does offer non alcoholic drinks and snacks for purchase about halfway through the ride. Personally, I found this to be unnecessary and I would recommend bringing your own drinks and snacks if you think that you will need them. At the end of the tour, your tour guides will bring up the option of leaving them a cash tip.
On your tour, you will experience sea life up close and personal. While cruising along the Cape May and Wildwood beaches, you will be looking for the Atlantic Bottle-Nosed Dolphins. Aside from the marine life, you will be able to see local points of interest and historical sites.
During our 90 minute trip out at sea, we saw a decent amount of dolphins. It was not as many as I would have hoped for but we did go on our tour towards the end of the season. My family has been on a previous tour during the month of July and saw about four times as many dolphins (they saw well over 100 dolphins). I would say that during our trip we saw around 30 dolphins in total. We were able stand and move around the boat to see the dolphins while the boat was not in motion. We also saw some of the historic sites in Cape May such as the concrete ship, lighthouse, and more.
Overall, I enjoyed the tour. We got to see a decent amount of dolphins and enjoy the gorgeous views that Cape May has to offer. I would definitely recommend this dolphin watch tour to everyone! It is great for all ages and is lots of fun! I cannot wait to go back again and see more of the incredible marine life.
