Plans for the Argentine Patagonia - Southern

The links below are some of the main websites that I used during my initial research of planning to go to the Southern Patagonia

Southern Patagonia

  • Sits beneath the Lake District and Atlantic Patagonia at Patagonia's Southernmost tip, this rustic district sits to the east of the Chilean border, sprawling downward to the verge of Antarctica

  • Boasting jaw-dropping sights—including Perito Moreno Glacier, Mount Fitz Roy, and Cueva de las Manos

  • Most visitors descend upon El Chaltén or El Calafate to experience Patagonia's rugged backcountry

    • From El Calafate (a remote desert town that serves as the base to journey across Perito Moreno Glacier), you can relish the towering ice fields and far-stretching verdant forests

    • Near El Calafate lies El Chaltén, a small town neighboring Mount Fitz Roy. From El Calafate, you can take an excursion to survey the Cave of the Hands' ornate and enigmatic cave arts

    • A variety of plane services, including LAN and LADE, operate from Buenos Aires and other major Patagonian cities to El Calafate

Highlights in the Southern Patagonia

  • Parque Nacional Torres del Paine

    • Towers of Paine - Dominates the landscape of South America’s finest National Park

    • Diverse landscapes - Ranging from teal and azure lakes to emerald forests, roaring rivers and that one big, radiant blue glacier

  • Isla Magdalena

    • Thriving Magellanic penguin colonies of Monumento Natural Los Pinguinos on Isla Magdalena and Isla Marta

    • The islands are 35km northeast of Punta Arenas

    • There are five hour ferry tours (CH$50,000 for adults) that spend 1.5 hours in transit and land for an hour at the island

    • Deports in Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday - December through February

    • Book tickets through Turismo Comapa and bring a picnic

  • Fitz Roy Range

    • In the northern part of the park, Fitz Roy Range - with its rugged wilderness and shark-tooth summits - is the trekking capital of Argentina

  • Ride the Range

    • Run by a family with pioneer roots in the region

    • Offers day visits that include hiking or riding, herding-dog and sheep-herding demonstrations

    • Barbecue lunch of a spit-roasted lamb

    • The meeting place is the dock at Singular Hotel

  • Puerto Natales

    • The gateway to Parque Nacional Torres del Paine

    • Boutique beers and wine tastings

    • Growing services that cater to international tastes

    • The town still maintains the glacial pace of living endemic to Patagonia

    • 250km northwest of Punta Arenas

    • It is the capital of the province of Ultima Esperanza

    • Southern terminus of the ferry trip through the Chilean fjords

  • Parque Nacional Pali Aike

    • Oddball National Park that is a desolate landscape of rugged volcanic steppe

    • Named “Devil’s Country” in Tehuelche

    • Excavations yielded important findings of extinct New World fauna

    • You may see guanacos, nandus, gray foxes, and armadillos

  • Glacier Perito Moreno

    • Among the Earth’s most dynamic and accessible ice fields

    • Stunning centerpiece of the southern sector of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares

    • It measures 30km long, 5km wide, and 60m high
