Itinerary Ideas

The itinerary is based from what I found from the link below:

I enjoyed the blog above greatly and I look forward to following in the footsteps of this trip and maybe more! If you get the chance, I think that the blog above is well worth the look!


Day 1: Arrival and Gansbaai

  • Fly into Cape Town and travel to Gansbaai in the Western Cape

  • Gansbaai is close to Dyer Island - Lots of Great White Sharks

  • Town is beautiful and laid back

  • Recommended place to stay: The Roundhouse

    • Guesthouse

    • $30 - $40 per night

    • Ideally 3 nights

    • Unique

    • Has a hot tub on the top deck

    • Has views of the town and ocean

    • Breakfast included

    • Can transfer you to and from Cape Town

    • Can arrange activities in Gansbaai

  • Recommended place to eat: Blue Goose

    • Fresh local seafood and South African beef

Day 2: Shark Cage Dive

  • Marine Dynamics

    • Pledge to marine conservation

    • $170 per person

    • Highly weather dependent - Ideal to stay in town for a couple of days in case of cancelations

Day 3: Southern Tip of Africa

  • The southernmost point is at Cape Agulhas - About a hour and a half from Gansbaai

  • Visit the lighthouse

  • Visit the point where the Indian and Pacific Oceans meet

  • Recommended place to eat: Pelican’s Harbour Cafe

    • Nearby Struisbaai

    • Cheap and great seafood platters

  • Extra Sightseeing

    • Walker Bay Wine Region

      • North of Gansbaai

      • Creation Wines located on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge

Day 4: Cape Town

  • About a 2 hour drive from Gansbaai

  • V&A Waterfront

    • South Africa’s oldest working harbor, huge shopping mall, Ferris wheel, large collection of shops and restaurants

    • Watershed - Large converted warehouse that now has more than 150 vendors selling anything from original art to vintage clothing

      • Ferries that go to Robben Island

    • Has the prison that Nelson Mandela spent 18-27 years of political imprisonment

      • Watch the sun set at Campus Bay

  • Recommended places to stay:

    • The Commodore Hotel ***

      • Upscale

      • Comfortable

      • Breakfast

      • Close to V&A Waterfront

      • Approximately $150 - $200 per night

      • Ideally 4 nights

    • The Taj

      • In the heart of downtown Cape Town

      • Pricey

      • Approximately $200 per night

    • The One 8 Hotel

      • Affordable

      • In Green Point

      • Short walk to a nice waterfront path

      • Approximately $100 per night

  • Recommended place to eat:

    • V&A Food Market

      • Street food type fare

Day 5: Cape Town

  • Helicopter tour of Cape Town

    • Around $100-$150 per person

    • One of the best ways to see Cape Town

  • Table Mountain

    • Large, flat mountain that overlooks all of the Mother City

    • If the weather is clear, take a cable car to the top (buy your tickets online)

      • You’ll see everything from Lion’s Head to Devil’s Peak to the Atlantic Ocean

  • Bo-Kaap

    • Colorful neighborhood

    • Small downtown neighborhood known as the Cape Malay Quarter

    • Multicultural make-up

    • Great ethnic food

    • If you have the time, take a cooking lesson

  • Recommended place to eat: Bo Kaap Kombuis

    • Traditional Cape Malay restaurant

Day 6: Cape Peninsula & Boulders Beach

Day 7: Sip Wine in Stellenbosch

  • South Africa is known for its wine

  • Constantia - Wine region close to Cape Town

    • Great for a morning or afternoon trip

  • Stellenbosch - Wine region roughly an hour from Cape Town

    • Whole day trip

      • Waterford Estate

    • Wine Safari

    • Ride out into the vineyards in a safari vehicle

    • Wine tastings

      • Other popular wineries in the region

    • Rust en Vrede

    • Delaire

    • Graff Estate

    • Tokara

Day 8: To Johannesburg

  • South Africa’s largest city

  • Must Do’s

    • Apartheid Museum in Soweto

    • Street art walking tour through the city

  • Recommended place to stay:

    • 54 on Bath

      • Approximately $150 per night

      • Ideally 2 nights

  • Recommended place to eat:

    • Bohemian Melville Neighborhood

      • Lucky Bean

        • Serves springbok and ostrich

Day 9: Cradle of Humankind

  • Book a tour out to Maropeng and the Sterkfontein Caves (The Cradle of Humankind)

    • Adventurous - Some crawling involved

    • Visit the place where some of the earliest humans on Earth lived

Day 10: Kruger National Park

  • Safari

  • Fly from Johannesburg to Skukuza on South African Airways

  • Recommended place to stay:

    • Jock Safari Lodge

      • Private concession

      • Villas come with soaker tubs, outdoor day beds that overlook a dry riverbed, and private plunge pools

      • Approximately $1,500 per night

      • Ideally 2 nights

Day 11: Kruger National Park

  • Devote 2-3 nights to Kruger

  • You can see the Big 5 and much more

  • As many game drives as you can fit it, 4+

Day 12: Return Home with a Lifetime of Memories
