Philadelphia's Magic Gardens is an immersive mixed media art environment that is completely covered with mosaics. The creator, Isaiah Zagar, used bicycle wheels, bottles, handmade tiles, and mirrors mixed with international folk art to chronicle his life and influences. There are two indoor galleries and a bi-level outdoor sculpture garden.
Philadelphia's Magic Gardens is a nonprofit museum. This immersive museum celebrates art in its many forms through community outreach, exhibitions, hands-on activities, public programs, and tours.
I really enjoyed this wholesome art experience. I had fun looking in every direction at the creative and unique artwork. While appreciating the art, I made new art by capturing the work through photograph (see below). I am continuing to make my own art through my words as I type this post.
General admission tickets vary in price. An adult ticket is $15.00, student and senior tickets are $12.00, children (6-12) are $8.00, and children (5 and under) are free. I found these prices to be reasonable, especially since this is a nonprofit museum that is dedicated to giving back to the community. There is also a parking garage across the street which we found to be convenient, but does come at a small fee. Inside the Magic Gardens, there are restrooms available - they are filled with mosaics as well.
I recommend spending a hour or less here to appreciate the art and make your own memories. After Ryan, my boyfriend, and I enjoyed the exhibit, we went to get a bite to eat at Hawthornes.
Hawthornes is a small beer cafe that offers bottles, growlers, and gourmet American grub. It is a cozy environment fitted with a fireplace and sofas.
I ordered Short Rib Tacos (braised beef short rib on flour tortillas, sharp cheddar, shaved iceberg lettuce, cilantro sour cream, and pico de gallo) for $15.00. My meal came with two tacos and a house salad. Overall, I thought that my meal was really delicious, fresh, and light but filling. I also had a mimosa with my meal which was good and standard.
Ryan ordered Fried Chicken and Waffles (poached eggs, hollandaise, crisp malted waffle) for $15.00. His meal was good, soft not soggy, and well seasoned. He had an Avery White Rascal with his meal which he said was good.
Overall, I had a wonderful day exploring this small part of the city. It was a short trip but I found it to be peaceful and worthwhile. I would recommend both Philadelphia's Magic Gardens and Hawthornes.
