  • Mental health does not have a status here in India because of stigma

  • A lot of Indian psychology students migrate to other countries because of higher wages

  • Some parts of India believes that mental disorders are demons, will go to a priest to try and remove it

    • Used to be physically chained

    • Used to be beaten to get the evil out

    • Now most people know that there us a science to these abnormalities

    • The priests are still used as a common treatment

    • Mental disorders are not curable but manageable

      • Bio, psycho, social model for treatment

    • Must have family with them when admitting

    • Relapses are common because of hostile family life

    • Relapses are less common when family is loving and positive

    • Expressed emotions

      • Joint and nuclear family stress

    • Mostly just nuclear families now

    • Marriage is heavily enforced by family

    • Women live with husbands family

  • Free treatment for people in poverty

  • You cannot lose your job for mental health problems in a government job but you can in a private company

    • 20% with IDD at this institution, NIMHANS

    • Patients do not have access to their file
