Forts and Fortunes - 07.27.22

Updated: Dec 18, 2022

Isabella and I started our day off by taking an Uber to Old San Juan to visit Castillo San Felipe del Morro also known as El Morro. This was the second fort built in Old San Juan with construction commencing in 1539 and finishing in 1790. During those 250 years, El Morro expanded to a six-level fortress designed to stop attackers who were coming from the sea. In 1961, the US Army retired El Morro, passing it on to the National Park Service to establish a museum. In 1983, El Morro and the walled city of Old San Juan were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nowadays, it is a popular tourist destination which displays beauty, history, importance, and strength. Isabella and I spent about an hour at the fort appreciating the view, exploring, shopping, and taking lots of photos. After the fort, we wandered the streets of Old San Juan stopping in countless boutiques and shops. Once our bodies were close to breaking from the weight of our shopping addiction, we went back to our Airbnb.

At the Airbnb we took time to rest and refresh. Once we were back to full health, we got ready to spend our night back in Old San Juan. This is where Isabella and I hit our next wave. We went back to Senor Frogs under the impression that it was a lady's night. It turns out that this special was only for “locals” and unfortunately my ancestors did not count. I was very annoyed by this, and we left without ordering anything. Of course, Isabella and I barely made it down the street when the skies opened up to a torrential downpour. We noticed that the island loved to have completely random, quick, and powerful storms. We did what we could and hid behind a tiny tree which barely covered us. After a few minutes, Isabella decided to make a run for it to find better protection from the storm. I had no choice but to follow mi loco prima. We got completely soaked. We found shelter in an alleyway and waited for the storm to pass. Once it passed, we continued our journey onward to dinner. We went to El Patio De Sam, and I ordered Fried Chicken with mixed vegetables for $15.95 and a mojito for $8.50. We enjoyed eating here and laughing about our luck or lack thereof. After dinner, we went to La Factoria, which we struggled to find. This was done purposefully. La Factoria was dark and mysterious, filled with secret passages and multiple bars. La Factoria has been listed on The World's 50 Best Bars for 5 years in a row with it only being open since 2013. Isabella and I enjoyed ourselves here and the staff made the experience that much more enjoyable. After La Factoria we went to El CAFETIN which had an upbeat vibe. The music (lots of Bad Bunny) was bumping and got everyone singing and dancing. My two favorite aspects of this bar were the $5 mojitos and the domino tables. I felt like I made my ancestors proud while playing multiple rounds of dominos with strangers at the bar.
