Environment

  • Kenya is a mixture of sandy beaches on the coast, highlands in the centre, and fertile plains in the West

  • The main wet season runs from April through June

  • The main dry season runs from December through March

Economy

  • Kenya is more expensive than Tanzania

  • On average, an economy flight from North America to Nairobi costs around $1,800 CAD

  • A 3-star hotel in Nairobi is around $100 CAD

  • The more expensive hotels are generally safer

Dining

  • Food is fairly cheap

  • Street food costs around $1 CAD per plate

  • Sit-down meals at a restaurant run between $6 to $12 a person

Tourism and Travelling

  • Kenya has a larger tourism industry with more hotels and guesthouses

  • You can easily exchange US dollars into shillings in any of the major banks

  • There are taxis and matatus abound in the cities

  • There is a large network of trains between the big cities and flights that can take you most places

    • Flights are the more expensive options for travel

      • Overall, Kenya has a better travel infrastructure

What to See

  • Masai Mara - Home to many animals, picturesque safari

    • At the Masai Mara National Reserve you'll find antelopes, baboons, bushbabies, caracals, cheetahs, civets, gazelles, giraffes, hippos, impalas, monkeys, servals, vervet, waterbucks, wildebeest, and zebras

    • There are 1,135 species of birds in Kenya, including flamingos and ostriches

    • You can also find the endangered black rhinos within Kenya

  • Lake Nakuru - Famous for its flocks of flamingos

  • Nairobi - One of Africa's most vibrant and bustling cities - Has a population of 4 million

  • Mt Kenya - Second tallest mountain on the continent
